Picture the early church gathering just before the sunrise. . .
A band of new believers in Jesus Christ is ready to make their commitment public. They are invited by the apostles to face the darkness and RENOUNCE their sin.
As an outward act to display their turning from evil, they are instructed to spit into the darkness.
Then the new believers are invited to face the rising sun and PRONOUNCE their commitment to Jesus Christ. The Good News of Jesus has always been verbal!
They repeat this act three times to solidify their decision. . .RENOUNCING sin and PRONOUNCING commitment to Jesus.
Then the new believer is taken into the water as the sun rises. . .They are placed under the water – A vivid display of being DEAD TO SIN. And then they are raised out of the water – a celebration of being ALIVE TO GOD!
